The versions available through apt-get and the like are entirely a
matter of what is present in the package repository you are updating
from, and that is entirely dependent on whoever creates the MPlayer
packages for that repository. We do not, and to some extent cannot,
support such repositories, or any packaged versions other than those
given on the Website.

If your repository does not provide a version which is more up-to-date,
and you want to update regardless, you will need to check out the source
code via Subversion (there should be instructions on the Website) and
compile it yourself. There pretty much is no other alternative.
