[MEncoder-users] x264 encoding 1 Pass fantastic, 2 Pass terrible

I am trying to encode some png files and whenever I try
to encode them in 2 passes the quality is very bad.
Here are the logs for each attempt and an example video.
2 Pass with turbo:-

I have encoded other files with 2 pass and similar settings
and they were ok, but the bit distribution did not seem to
be as wide as it could have been. I am using x264-snapshot-20080227-2245
so I thought of using a newer one, but there was an email in
the archives suggesting that the rate control has problems in
some of the newer versions.
