Furthermore, you could try to upgrade your libfreetype.

Besides, why is libfreetype used in your setup? Isn't freetype only used
for OSD (subtitles, time)? Maybe you could just move the fonts somewhere
else, so mencoder can't find them anymore (and doesn't try to do a
read_font_desc_ft()). Or maybe the other way around - perhaps there are
no fonts installed?
